Bente Schreppers;
Hello! I am Bente and I am thirteen years old. I live in Tilburg, with my parents and brothers. My brothers are nine and fifteen years old. My hobby is hockey. I also really love to laugh with my friends. In my spare time I like to read and to skate on my pennyboard. My favourite food is Asian food, I love it because it is sometimes very spicy! My favourite subjects at school are maths and English. I don’t like the subjects Art and German. I really love vacations and traveling, four years ago I went to America and this year I went to Dubai and Malaysia. When I am older I want to become a brain surgeon because I want to help people. If I can’t become a doctor than I want to work for a charity like War Child. One of the most amazing things I have ever done was canyoning, during canyoning you travel through canyons by jumping of high rock and sliding of rocks. It was so cool! |
Isa van Lierop;
Hi! My name is Isa van Lierop. I’m 13 years old. I live in Tilburg, that’s located in the south of The Netherlands. I live together with my family. My mother’s name is Karin and my father is called Erik. Noud and Kim are my brother and sister, they are younger than I am. Noud is 11 years old and Kim is 8 years old. I don’t have any pets. I really like to play hockey, I do this 3 times in a week. I play in the MC2 of HC Tilburg. I have hockey training at Monday and at Wednesday, and at Saturday I’ve a hockey match. At Wednesday before my own hockey training I train another team. I played the trumpet for three years but last year I stopped, it was to busy with school and my hockey trainings. At school I’m doing great, I’m now in the second year of TTA, this means that I get 70% of my lessons in English, I really like this, because in this way I can improve my English. |
Maxmara Rijkaart;
Hello, I’m Maxmara and I’m 13 years old. I live in Tilburg, that’s a place in the south of Holland. I live together with my mother, my stepfather, my sister and my brother. I also have pets; 4 dogs, 2 birds and 2 rabbits. My dogs are called Beer, Boedha, Sasha and Coco, they are Old English Bulldogs. My school is called Beatrix College and I’m in the second year. I’m on TTA, that means that you get most of the subjects in English. I like TTA because we make trips and I can improve my English. My sport is horse riding, because it’s not my own horse I’m riding on, I ride twice a week. The horse is called Zorino and he’s very sweet. He is a KWPN’er and he has a black colour. My sister has her own horse but I don’t ride on him because she likes to do that herself |

READING RESEARCH
Introduction
We actually don't expect much from this research, because we don't think that we can find many interesting articles about grandparents. But we will try very hard! If we find something we think it will be about the role of grandparents when parents of their grandchildren divorce. Because that is the only thing that is important to write about for a newspaper.
We actually don't expect much from this research, because we don't think that we can find many interesting articles about grandparents. But we will try very hard! If we find something we think it will be about the role of grandparents when parents of their grandchildren divorce. Because that is the only thing that is important to write about for a newspaper.
What happens to grandparents by divorce of their children?
A divorce of parents is very sad, for their children, but it’s also very painful for their grandparents…
53% of the grandparents do have different kind of contact with their grandchildren after a divorce. A small amount (around 12%) doesn’t have contact with their grandchildren at all! 66% are very sad about the hurt that’s being done to their grandchildren, they only think about the consequences for them. One half of the grandparents in this situation are just angry. And the other 61% has no contact with their daughter- or son in law!
Most grandparents want more rights when it’s about relationship with their grandchildren. Grandparents are very important for their grandchildren; they can provide a safe place and stability.
Only a judge can decide this. A judge only gives permission when it’s proved that grandparents took care of their grandchildren in the past. If this isn’t the case grandparents need permission from the child’s parents, to remain in contact with the grandchildren.
Although everyone has a say in it, the judge will always look what’s the best for the child, of course!

* Living with your grandparents.
Some grandparents raise there grandchildren, it mostly happens when the parents die, the mother is to young to raise a child or when parents divorce and both don’t want the children. It could also be that the parents did something illegal and can’t see their children anymore. When grandparent’s raise their grandchildren it happens with love. But when they go to a foster family the child could feel awkward being with unknown people. Also a child has a biological relationship with their grandparents, so it makes it easier for the child to adapt to the lives of their grandparents. There’s also a plus points for the grandparents; they get like an second change to raise children because now they get more time to be there for the child. But when grandparent’s raise their grandchildren they also need to remember that they can’t only have fun like most grandparents have with their grandchildren. They need to have rules and be stricter. Of course grandparents aren’t perfect parents so they still need to pay a lot of attention to the child. They can also ask for help if the child doesn’t behave well because of missing his real parents.

* Grandparents role.
Traditional role
From research you can see grandparents each have their own ideas about their role. Some are like babysitters for the family, some only come for like example for birthdays. Granddads do less with their grandchildren as grandmas. Mostly the grandpas do all of boy stuff like going to sport fields and go fishing. Grandmas mostly do more girly stuff like going to ballet, go shopping and baking.
Babysitting
Some people think babysitting is very important for grandparent’s to babysit. It’s good for the children but it’s also relaxing for the grandparent’s. It’s better than bring them to crèches or hire an babysitter because people only get paid for it and mostly only do it for the money. Of course you have exceptions but grandparents always make it a fun time. It’s not proved why grandparents like it so much but there are a few things that could be a reason; children keep you young and you spend your day well.
Background
There are some grandparents that stay in the background in free will. They want to let the parent’s sole problems by their own. It also could affect the relation of the grandparent and grandchild in a bad way if they tell all the mistakes they make.
Doing fun things
Most grandparents do this and they see it as an very enjoyable moment. Around 88% of the grandparents do it and 97% of the costs go to the grandparents. When the grandchildren are on primary school they do the most together. Then it gets a bit less but around 20 they pick it up again. some examples they do are; going to attraction parks, going to nature like the sea, going to playgrounds and going to the swimming pool.

* Grandparents and WhatsApp
Older people get older and older, and that also means more health problems and limitations. Because of this more older people need to stay home. Dr. Annetje Bootsma, (specialist geriatrics) thought of a special project to help older people that are sitting alone at home: ‘Whatsgrandfather’ (or in Dutch; WhatsOpa).
In her practice Bootsma had a lot of conversations with children of elderly people, about care problems and a decline health. According to specialists it’s much more affective to have a lot of contact with the grandparents, a perfect way for that is WhatsApp!
If older people have WhatsApp they won’t feel very alone all the time. When they can app their family and receive a messages back, they feel more concerned with their family.
The only problem is that not all the older people want a smartphone. For them it’s too much work to figure out how everything works. But when they finally have a smartphone or tablet they find it very handy.http://www.whatsappen.nl/nieuws/15680/opa-en-oma-willen-aan-de-whatsapp
* Grandparents are indispensable during crisis
Grandparent take care of their grandchildren more than they did in the past, and because of the crisis they are needed even more.
If grandparents do not ‘’babysit’’ on their grandchildren, 4 out of 10 families have to start paying for day-care. Or one of the parents even has to stop working!
Day-care is also very expensive, that is the main reason why grandparents have to help the parents more and more. But the grandparents do not mind, they love to help their grandchildren
72% of the grandparents watch their grandchildren more than one day in the week. And most of them need to watch two or three at the same time
For research they asked 100 grandparents what they thought of taking care of their grandchildren. 65% of the grandparents like it that they can do something for their grandchildren, 38% of the grandparents gets really happy of taking care for the grandchildren, only 2% thinks that it’s too hard.http://www.plusonline.nl/special-artikelen/opa-en-oma-zijn-in-crisistijd-onmisbaar
Conclusion
We actually found a lot of different information, and that surprised us a lot. We thought that grandparents is a boring topic for newspapers to write about. But you can find it in the news a lot. It was really easy to find interesting articles with five different topics. In our introduction we wrote that we thought that most articles would be about divorcing, and that is totally true. A lot of newspapers write about the role of grandparents when their children divorce. But the thing is, we had no clue that this topic came in the news so much, that's why we had bad expectations about this research.

RESULTS SURVEY
INTERVIEWS WITH DIFFERENT GRANDPARENTS!
We did some interviews with grandparents, here a small overview just to see the similarities and differences.
the first questions we asked everyone were; What's your name? and May we ask your age? none of the people had problems to answer these questions. the other questions are readable on the left! <--- We also made a video of one of the interviews you can watch it below. |
CONCLUSION
During this project called EUMIND, we learned a lot. It was enjoyable too. The topic we got was grandparents, so we learned a lot about this, but not only about our main topic. We learned how to make a webpage, editing videos too. We also had to do some interviews.
In our opinion it was a very big project and we had to do many different things.
We had a lot of questions where we were very interested about. For example the questions if the grandparents thought they are respected or not, they all answered that they where, and that surprised us a lot. In addition we thought that grandparents would want the government to support them more, but they are all very happy with what the government does for them. Although it could always be a little bit better. We also found out that some parents would like to work a little bit longer, while others like to enjoy their pension. It also surprised us a lot that more than 60% of the grandparents has some kind of social media. However; some grandparents think it's useless. Most of the grandparents use social media especially to communicate with their family, they love it to be able to app their grandchildren and to share pictures. Another thing that we found out is that grandparent play a pretty important role in de lives of their children and grandchildren, because they help them and take care of their grandchildren a lot. This also brings us to the following, actually all of the grandparents feel very respected by their family. When elderly people are not working, they mostly spend their day with playing games and babysitting on their grandchildren.
This project is almost finished now; we did a lot of research. It went quite well, in our opinion, the only problem we had was the fact that Bente is in the other class, and this caused some problems with the planning, we do have a different timetable and that made it quite difficult, to join each other after school! I hope you learned something about grandparents in the Netherlands, and we liked learning about grandparents in your country! Thanks, to EUMIND!

COMPARISON
After this project we had to compare our work, with the work from Indian people. The first thing we thought was eye-catching is the fact that in India most people live together with their grandparents in one house, which isn't the case here; in The Netherlands. Grandparents are more important in India, compared to The Netherlands. Over here most grandparents ar seen as family, nothing more, but in India that's completely different; They play a very important role, in people life. that were actually the most important thing we found out!
