Group introduction
Why our name?
We were thinking about a name for our group. We thought maybe we should do something with the first letters of our first names, but with those letters we couldn’t think of any good name. Then we thought about the last letters of our first names and we found the perfect name. “The NEMO squad. So our group name consists of the last letters of our first names. Our names are Lysan, Nathalie, Sem and Ivo. So that forms the name The NEMO squad. We also liked the film Nemo; it was our childhood.
What is TTA?
We go to school at the Beatrix College and it’s a very big school. We do an education called TTA, that means that we have 70% of all our lessons in English and the other 30% in Dutch. We’re now in the second year and It’s really fun and eductional . We make a lot of trips to foreign countries, for example in our first year we went for a week to England. We also like to do different kind of projects that’s because it’s fun to meet and talk with other people from another continent or country. Next to the lessons they teach us to be more self-relaint. TTA is also very handy for the school after this like a university, because there is a lot of English in the universities of the Netherlands.
What do we have in common?
Our group consists of two boys and two girls. As you can see on the picture we are very crazy, like to have fun and laugh a lot! We all go to the same school and are together in the same class. We even do the same education called TTA. We all like the film “finding Nemo”. The hobbies of the two girls in our group: Lysan and Nathalie is dancing. The hobbies of the boys in our group: Sem and Ivo are playing football and gaming.

ACTION PLAN
Reading Research
What do we expect?
We expect to find that women aren't treated equaly in the Netherlands, because you don't see very often women at the top. We mean that for example at work men mostly get a higher salary than women and at home the women do more work. That is also the kind of information we think to find, so to summarise we think that women aren't valued as much as men. We are looking forward to do this research, because we also have to deal with women empowerment everyday.
Down below you can find 5 articles about our subject: women empowerment
Women empowerment
What does women empowerment exactly mean? Women empowerment is enabling women to have equal chances in social, political and espects then men. Women's political empowerment is necessary to give women a voice in the policies that affect their lives. It also entails that women have the authority to make their own decisions about recourses that lead to prosperity.
Economic empowerment can help women to be empowered politically. Political empowerment allows women to take control over the policies that are good for their economic standigs. Social empowerment enables women to participate economically and politically, which in turn creates a higher standing in society. Not many women are empowered yet in this way.
Knowing this 'problem' there are people who want to give power to women. Although the intentions for giving power to women are good, this is not the solution. Women also have to take power for themselves. Some ways for women to empower themselves are for example: women's business associations, good education available for all women and full political rights.
The UN has made a list of principles that offer practical guidance to the business and private sector on how to empower women in the workplace, market place and in the community. The principles are:
- Establish high-level corporate leadership for gender quality.
- Treat all women and men fairly at work.
- Ensure the health, safety and well being of all women and men workers.
- Promote eduction, training and professional development for women.
- Implement enterprise development, supply chain and marketing practices that empower women.
- Promote equally through community initiatives and advocacy.
- Measure and publicy report on progress to achieve gender quality.
Equal treatment for men and women at work?
Women and men are not really equal treated in the Netherlands! When you have a woman and a man doing the same job, the men are getting more money than the women, but now it is much better than in the past. In the past (until1960) you needed to stop with working when you married (when you were a woman). The salary from a woman goes down when she gets married and that from a man gets higher. The difference of the salary between women and men is about 18,5%. That from the men is way higher than that from the women.
The government is working on it, because they are against it too, but you can’t do that in like 2 seconds. In the law it is forbidden to give men more money than women when they have the same job, but it still happens. I hope it will change soon, because women can be as smart as men or even smarter!
Who makes the decisions in the household?
Now a days the man and woman are both making the decisions in the family. They discuss it with each other and mostly when they have children, the children can also decide with the parents. It became a lot better than when you look at the past. I mean like until 1970. The men had the word in the family. It is getting much better now a days, everyone is equal in the family.
If you talk about the household with washing clothes, cleaning up and looking after the children etc. Than the women are still doing more, also most of the time the women are looking after the children at home, because the day cares are getting more expensive all the time. With doing jobs at home the women still do a bit more than men, but I hope there is getting change, because women work really hard for the family and sometimes men can do a bit more.
Femmes for Freedom
Unfortunately men and women aren't treated equal in the Netherlands, but in the Netherlands there is an organisation that is trying to get more rights for women. The organisation is called Femmes for Freedom and Femmes for Freedom calls attention for womenr rights. Femmes for freedom stands for equal rights for man and women, but espacially for women. They want women to have full autonomy aboat their own mind, body, spirit and desire.
Femmes for freedom want women to decide everything by their selves:
- Femmes for Freedom is against the violation of women human rights.
- Femmes for Freedom thinks that men and women should be judged equally.
- Femmes for Freedom is against all forms of violance of women.
- Femmes for Freedom is against a special dress code for women, women should be able to decide for themselves in which kind of clothes they feel comfortable.
- Femmes for Freedom believes that women's control their life, body and desire. They set rules when it comes to sexuality, pregnancy, abortion, sterilization and healthcare.
- Femmes for Freedom committed against honor killings, domestic violence, forced marriages, marital captivity, polygamy, abandonment, hidden women and female circumcision.
Aletta Jacobs
In 1854 on the 9th of February was Aletta Henriette Jacobs born in the city Sappemeer in the Netherlands. This woman has done a lot when we talk about women empowerment. Partly because of her, women can say more and do more here in the Netherlands. Do you want to know what she has done and what kind of woman she is? You'll read it in this article about this very strong woman.
Aletta Jacobs began very young with saying that she wants that women could go to school, just like boys could in that time. In the year 1870 was she the first woman who was officially welcome to the HBS. This is a sort of high school, she went there in the city where she was born. Later she really liked to go to school and wanted to begin with the university. She wrote a letter to the minister and the minister wrote her back. Finally she could go to the university for medicines, but she only had a trial of a year. Even with this she was very proud, because she was the first woman in the Netherlands that, that could do. This all happend in the year 1871.
THe most famous Dutch representative is how many people Aletta saw. This woman fought for women's suffrage. Aletta Jacobs was a doctor, so she had the things you needed to vote. She really used this, because it was one of her goals to vote. After this women couldn't vote anymore, now it was really put into the law. She began a congress, protested and a lot more.
As you've already read was Aletta Jacobs someone who really wanted, what she wanted. She fought for her rights and that from others. many women in the Netherlands are proud of her and surpised that she dared everything she did. In these years it wasn't normal that all the women did this, but Aletta still did it and it even worked. It is very handsome that she did all this. What do you think about this woman? Would you dare to do all this in that time period?
Conclusion
The information we have found on the internet is similar to the things we had expected before we summarised the articles. As we already mentioned, we thought that women aren't valued as much as men and that conclusion was right. There was a lot of information about our subject on the internet and intresting facts that we didn't even know. Our final conclusion is that women and men aren't treated equaly in the Netherlands, but a lot of organisations are working on it. For example Femmes for Freedom.

Main research (survey results)
For this project we made a survey with 10 questions, we published this on social media such as Facebook, whatsapp etc. This is the reason why we had 55 reactions, we worked them out in graphs and we hope it's clear now. In the document down below you can find the results of our survey, ofcourse our survey was about woman empowerment! We covered a large variety of subjects such as, what do you think about woman empowerment, what does it mean? etc. (to see our results click on the file below).
We had difficulties with downloading the file of the outcomes of the survey, but if you are still interested you can download the file down below!

Results of our interview
! Down below you can find a interview about women rights and if you click on the picture you can find a video of us interviewing someone !
1. What does in your opinion women’s rights mean?
In my opinion women rights mean that woman have their own say in work and society, that they are treated equally to men.
2. Do you think that women have the same rights everywhere in the world? If not. What is different?
No, in some countries or cultures women have different
rights then for example in the Netherlands. In many countries women have no comparable right then men for example they cannot go to school, work and vote. Most of the time they are treated with no respect.
3. Do you think that in the Netherlands women are treated equally?
Yes, although I have the impression that women more and more have to prove themselves against men. But also not because especially with work women aren’t treated equally women get less paid.
4. Are you aware that women in your environment are treated different then men?
No, not really.
5. Where in your opinion should women’s rights be improved?
In my opinion this is really important in Islamic cultures and in African and Asian countries as well. Actually it’s just important everywhere in the world!
6. From what age women’s rights are important in your opinion?
I think from maturity, but in some countries/cultures already from a very young age. But when they become an adult it is important as well!
7. Can you name one or more persons that stood up for women’s rights?
When I talk about persons that stood up for women’s rights I really think about Emmeline Pankhurst and Malala. They did such a great job and because of them the society changed.
8. What relation do women’s rights have with religion?
Well, in some religions it is just a traditional practice that women aren’t treated equally and they cannot suddenly change this.
9. Do you think that there is a certain part of the world where women’s rights are violated?
Yes, in the Islamic part and specifically where the Sharia is practised.
10. What is according to you an ideal situation concerning women’s rights?
According to me an ideal situation is that women are treated equally but not only women everyone should be treated equally. Everyone has the same rights!

Conclusion
The last few months we (the Nemo Squad) worked on our project about women empowerment. In our opinion it went quite well. We learned a lot from this project, we worked very hard with this project and we became smarter because of this project. The question we had to answer was:' Are women and men treated equally?' During this project we found out that it's different per country. It isn't either yes or no. The project went very smooth and nearly flawless. Everything was done on time and we worked together as a team, but what did we actually notice?
The main question
There was a main question, which was the big topic in our project. During the project we found the answer to the question:' Are women and men treated equally?' In our opinion we said that it is different per country. For example are the rights for women in India very different then here in the Netherlands. Girls in the Netherlands can vote and say what they want, but some girls have totally different rules about this. However, we already knew this, it still surprised us to read that.
The survey
We made a survey to see how much people already know about the subject of women empowerment. We found it quite difficult to make a survey about women empowerment, because to be honest, we didn’t know what to ask at all. Of course their opinion and the definition of women empowerment, but what more? In the end it went very smoothly and we made a survey of ten questions.
In the answers we recognized that most people thought the same about women empowerment. We couldn’t see whether a female or male answered our survey, but what we could see is that everyone has a bit of the same opinions and thoughts about women empowerment. It is and will probably stay a sensitive subject, although we as Dutch people don't know how it is to be treatend badly.
To find the information
In the beginning we weren’t that interested in this topic and didn’t made the effort to look up some websites about women empowerment. Which was not a very good start of course, but during reading all that stuff, it became better and better. We found out that it was quite unique. This was the reason why it became more interesting to us. However, it was difficult to find more different subjects within the subject women empowerment. This is why we spent a lot of time working on this, but in the end it all worked and we found the information, plus all the information we needed. That is where it’s all about!
How did we work as a team?
Doing this project, made us as the Nemo Squad a very good team. Our friendship became stronger and we even didn’t recognize that. Which is of course very cool! We divided the things to do very equally and everyone had their own job. There was no complaining about this, so we can say that it went like flawless. We didn’t chose the groups ourselves, but it was a very good choice of the teachers to put us together.
There we are at the end of the project of our subject women empowerment. We were busy with it for a couple of months, but it seems like we started yesterday. It went very quick and in our opinion is this a very good sign. It was very educational, interesting, fun and sometimes a bit complicated project. But we made it and can be very proud with the end result. We reached our aim and are happy to hear that!

Comparison
After we rounded of this project we had to compare our investigations to the ones from India. In this comparison we will compare our results and thoughts of the project we had to make about women empowerment with the students of the Bal Bharati Public School from India. When we were looking at the website of the Indian students, you could really see that they put a lot of effort in this project and have a really strong opinion about this. We have that as well, but ours opinion is of course a bit different.
When we read the Interviews the students had taken to their parents and grandparents, we could see a really clear difference in the answers of the grandmother and mother. The grandmother lived a long period of her life in an unequal situation and had to live in fear. In that time she couldn’t study and was only good for the housework and taking care of the children.
We also noticed that women in the Netherlands and other European countries have been treated equally much longer then in India. In India the newest generation can live in a complete equal situation.
