Dutch Pride
Hi, we're The Dutch Pride. We have chosen this name because we are proud to be Dutch and we love our country. We are going to introduce you to weddings and wedding rituals in the Netherlands. Our school is called the Beatrix College and we are following a bilingual education, English and Dutch.
We were put in this groups by our teachers, so we couldn't choose who to work with. We want to make the best of this with the four of us, we will all do our very best to give the best result. Although the four of us are all very different, we always agree very quickly.
Anyway our 4 group members are Joep, Jeroen, Katharina and Esmée. The boys like gaming and the girls like to play hockey. We like working on this product because it's all new to us, we learn about India, we learn to introduce ourselves and to make our own webpage. Click on our pictures to view our introduction clips.
Esmée
Hi, I’m Esmée and I’m 13 years old. I live in Holland, together with my little sister, my mom, my dad and my dog. Right now I’m in the second
grade of my secondary school. My school is called Beatrix College and I follow a bilingual education, so I get almost all of my subject in English. Beside school I love playing hockey, I have training 2 times a week and I play a match every Saturday. It’s also very important to me to spend time with my friends, so after school I like to hang out with them. Sometimes we stay at someone’s home or we go swimming etcetera. Actually you can say that I’m addicted to my social media, I spend most time on Instagram and Snapchat. I really like to see what all my friends have been doing and I like to search for beautiful Tumbler pictures. Together with my friends I make DIY’s (do it yourself) with this pictures found. Another thing I like to do is listening to music, while I’m cycling or when I walk with my dog. I’m a huge fan of Ariana Grande so I listen to her music very often. I think this is everything you need to know about me! Thank you for reading this. Esmée |
Katharina Hello, allow me to introduce myself…
My name is Katharina, I’m 13 years old and I live in Tilburg together with my mother, father and little sister. Tilburg is part of the Brabant region, located in the south of the Netherlands nearby Belgium. My parents are originally from Indonesia but my sister and I both were born here. I am Christian Protestant and enjoy going to church every Sunday. This is my second year high school at the Beatrix College. I have chosen to do my high school in English because it gives me the chance to have the international contact. There are 2 classes bilingual education and I am in class 2TTA2. It is fun to go to school. Especially after the summer vacation when you meet all your friends again. Besides school, hanging out with my friends and shopping, I also love to playing hockey, music, piano and spending time with my family. Loves, Katharina |
Jeroen
Hi! I am Jeroen and I am 13 years old, I have five pets: 3 chickens and 2 rabbits. I play football and my favourite game is Hearthstone. I like to talk with friends and hang around. I live outside the city centre of Tilburg, which is a city in the Netherlands. I have one little brother and no sisters. My school is called the Beatrix College. I am doing TTA, that is the only type of education in the Netherlands where you have to speak English most of the time. My bedroom is pretty big so I also make my homework and play games in it. I have no favourite music genre or artist but I do dislike hard rock and stuff like that. My favourite food is pasta, pancakes and French fries. My favourite colour is light blue but mostly I like all colours. I hope you learned some new things about my life and that you enjoyed. Kind regards, Jeroen |
JoepHello my name is Joep. I am thirteen years old and I live in the Netherlands. I live nearby school with my parents and my older brother. He is sixteen years old. I also have two goldfish.
Things I like to do in my free time are: • Gaming on my IPad. • Jumping on my trampoline. • Watching television. • (Mountain)biking. • Relaxing. • Watching YouTube. • Sporting (my sports are Judo and Jiu Jitsu). My school is called “the Beatrix college”. I am currently in the second grade of TTA. This is a bilingual education so we speak English the whole day. My favourite subject is technology because I can build things out of my imagination there. I hate the subject history because I think it’s too boring to talk about things that already happened a long while ago. Joep |
Action plan
Reading research
Intro
We think that we already know somethings about the weddings in the Netherlands like: the bride wears a white dress most of the time and most weddings go on untill the late evening, we have all been to a wedding already. But maybe there are some things that we don’t know yet and that is what we are going to find out with our reading research. We are looking forward to doing this research and finding strange facts about our weddings in our country. And we hope you all also learn something about it.
Ways of living together in the Netherlands
Marriage and registered partnership
In the Netherlands partners can choose from two different forms of living arrangement that are regulated by law: they can marry or enter into a registered partnership.
Marriage in the Netherlands in general community of property
In the Netherland, marriage automatically takes place in general community of property. Marriage in general community of property means that all the property and debts of each partner are shared. It is possible to exclude certain items, such as a bequest or inheritance, from the community of property
Marriage must be registered in the Netherlands
Marriages that have been done in another country cannot be registered in the Netherlands until the marriage certificate has been authenticated. Partners can request more information from the embassy of the country where they were married.
A Wedding Day in the Netherlands
Reception
Reception is the start of the wedding day, where mostly extended family, friends, colleagues and/ or neighbors of the marrying couple are invited.
This session is relatively short.
Registration Ceremony
The Registration Ceremony is the procedure done by the civil servant who owns the legal right to host a marriage ceremony. Before the ceremony, the marrying couple would have already met the civil servant once to give him their own 'love story', and then the civil servant would tell the story during the ceremony. Today, you can choose to have the ceremony in approved churches, restaurants or even outdoor venues.
Gift Expectation
Invitation cards would also give you the clue on expected gifts, if there are.

Weddings and marriages in Holland
Weddings in the Netherlands can vary a lot. The only thing that everyone who gets married has to do, is a marriage for the regulation. It depends on the person what kind of events will be on the wedding.
A traditional wedding always contains the marriage for the regulation. Most of the couples choose to have a photographer, who takes pictures of the whole day. If the bridal couple is faithful to the church, they will also marry there. Mostly there is also a feast, and after the diner there is a reception ( a party after the wedding).
The bridal couple mostly invite other people for the traditional ceremonies as for the party. During the dinner, the parents or good friends can hold a speech, and during the party there is some entertainment. The entertainment is mostly thought of by the friends of the bridal couple, so they get a great evening. There is no official or traditional wedding in Holland, so it totally depends on the bridal couple themselves.

Weddings in the Netherlands.
In the Netherlands people get married to show that the groom and the bride absolutely love each other. Also sometimes people do it because they then get more rights. When the groom asks it to the bride he mostly shows a ring which represents a long marriage. The ring is made of silver or gold which are high priced materials and they represent that a marriage is precious. When she says ‘yes’ she is engaged. Then they will start planning the marriage party. The bride wears a big dress and the groom wears a chic suit.
On the day of the marriage the whole family and friends come to a special location which is chosen before by the pair. They come first and sit down. Then the pair comes and ceremony starts. the wedding master starts the ceremony and after that is finished they are oficialy married, and this is to be celebrated with a big party and a big cake. The party goes on till it’s very late and everyone goes home.
After the wedding the pair goes on honeymoon. They go to a destination to celebrate the marriage with each other.

The wedding of our King and Queen
The beautiful wedding of our King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, on February the 2nd, is already some time ago. It all happened in the year 2002 and in this article we are going to take a look at their wedding.
The wedding of Willem-Alexander and Máxima was held on the 2nd of February 2002 (02-02-’02). The tear of Máxima is one of the things the Dutch people will never forget. Maxima cried at the moment some dancers danced the tango. The other famous moment of the wedding of the King and Queen is ‘The balcony kiss’. The married couple kissed publicly at the balcony of Paleis op de Dam. They kissed each other 5 times underneath the golden confetti while 50 million people were watching, not only the people who were there, but everybody over the whole country via social media.

conclusion
The texts we have found on the Internet are the same as we had expected in the beginning. As I already mentioned we have all been to a wedding ourselves so we kind of already knew what to expect. There is a lot of information that we haven’t covered, to our surprise, there is more to find than we expected to find. For example, we found out that in the past, weddings could only be held in the church, also, most people invite different groups to different parts of their wedding ceremony, we also found out tht the church official already meets the bride and groom before the wedding so they can tell him their love story. Our expectations have been outdone by what we found on the Internet because there is a lot of information about Dutch weddings and ceremonies that we didn’t even know.

The main research
The interview
We did 5 interviews at a local shopping market near our school. Also, we made a video of one of us interviewing and we put the subtitles at the bottom. Some other answers to our questions can be found at the to of our video as well.
|
The online surveys
For our online surveys we divided the questions into 2 categories: for people who aren't married (yet) and for people who are married, we covered a large variety of subjects like, when did you get married or how long did the preperations take? We put our surveys on facebook and sent them to all people we could contact with. You can see the results by yourself down here. In total we had an amount of 117 reactions on the surveys.
Conclusion: most people we interviewed, married quite recently but some elderly people married a couple of years ago.
Conclusion: Most people actually marry for love but there are some other reasons as well.
Conclusion: for most people it took quite some time, but it is very different per person.
Conclusion: most weddings are traditional.
Conclusion: all of the people are fine with it.
Conclusion: for most people the actual marriage is the most important event.
Conclusion: most people got ingaged very romantically, but some can't remember.
Conclusion: most people stay together quite some time before they marry.
Conclusion: for most people it is the same.
Conclusion: most of the people said 'Yes', so the youth in the Netherlands wants to marry in the future.
Conclusion: as you can see almost everybody said 'No'.
Conclusion: most of the people who filled this survey in, were the youth of our age, that is why the answers are mostly 'I am too young' and 'Not in love' are.
Conclusion: most of the people do not have a special requirement.
Conclusion: many people think loyalty is important, but some said 'My wedding dress' or 'The party'.
Conclusion: most of the people are not engaged yet. So they couldn't answer for how long.
Conclusion
EUMIND was a very educational project for us. We learned about at lot of things and not only about our specific subject. We learned things about making a webpage, making a survey and doing interviews as well. This was a big project but we as a group are very proud of what we have produced as end result. Skyping with India was also a very special thing about this project, while we were doing this we also learned some general things about the other subjects. Sometimes we had a little discussion in our group, or we had some problems with the website but we got everything finished in time. After all we can conclude that the most people in Holland marry for love, that they mostly marry for the regulation and the church and for most people it lasted more than a half year to prepare their wedding. In addition we can conclude that most people think the actual marriage is the most important part of the day as well as that most people are together between 5 & 10 year before they get married. We were very happy that all our questions were answered and that our surveys were well reacted.
We already knew some things about marriages in the Netherlands, and what we expected to find was indeed what we found. Weddings in the Netherlands are not really that special like in India. It is an important day for Dutch people, but it has nothing particular to do with the Dutch culture. On the other hand, in India it is a really big part of the culture. This was already part of our expectation so it was not really a surprise for us. Over all, we enjoyed working on the EUMIND project and we’re proud of our groups’ end result.
Comparison
After we rounded of this project, we had to compare our investigations with the ones from the Indians. We found out that the weddings in India are very traditional which is not really the case in Holland. In the Netherlands your wedding day is very important, but in India it’s the most important decision in a person’s life. The significance of a wedding is much more important in India as in Holland. A wedding in India can last even five days, in the Netherlands it only lasts one day. This is because we don’t have that much special ceremonies. An Indian wedding includes a lot of dances, rituals, ceremonies and the preparation is very important as well. In addition, the costs of an India wedding can rise very high, in Holland this can happen as well but because the Indian weddings are much bigger it’s even more in India. Our conclusion is that in both countries the wedding day is very important, but in India it’s all much bigger and much more related with the beautiful Indian culture.
